• Planned Service Alterations

    At times it is unavoidable that Network Rail infrastructure improvement works may affect some of our services, meaning alterations to the scheduled timetables. Arriva Trains Wales and Network Rail apologise for any inconvenience that these temporary alterations may cause.

    We advise passengers intending to travel to enquire before starting their journey for full details of altered trains, onward connections and additional road transport. Details of alterations can be obtained below or from your local staffed booking office.

19:34 Cardiff Central to Holyhead will be diverted via Crewe, passengers for stations to Chester travel on 21:50 Shrewsbury to Wrexham General and connecting bus from Wrexham General to Chester.

20:17 Cardiff Central to Manchester Piccadilly, bus replaces train between Crewe and Manchester Piccadilly. 

21:04 Birmingham International to Manchester Piccadilly will be diverted via Crewe and terminate at Chester, passengers should then travel on the additional 23:22 Chester to Manchester Piccadilly.

22:28 Chester to Wolverhampton, bus replaces train between Wrexham General and Chester.

22:23 Crewe to Chester will not run.

22:35 Manchester Piccadilly to Shrewsbury will be diverted and not call at Wilmslow, a bus will run from Manchester Piccadilly to Crewe calling at Stockport and Wilmslow.

22:35 Shrewsbury to Wrexham General additional, passengers connect into the 23:25 bus from Wrexham General calling Chester, Helsby, Frodsham, Runcorn East, Warrington Bank Quay, Earlestown, Newton-le-Willows and Manchester Piccadilly.

00:22 Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury will start at 00:35.

04:35 Cardiff Central to Manchester Piccadilly will depart at 04:30.

05:37 Cheltenham Spa to Maesteg starts from Chepstow, passengers should use CrossCountry service from Cheltenham Spa for connection.

  • 23:14 (Monday to Thursday) Manchester Piccadilly to Chester will be diverted Stockport and Northwich. Replacement bus will call at all booked stations between Manchester and Chester

Amended service on the Valley Lines on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October 2014

Engineering work is taking place on the Valley Lines with various line closures.

An amended service will run with services from Rhymney, Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare and Treherbert terminating at Cardiff Central.

On Saturday there will be no replacement bus services operating from Cardiff Central to Radyr calling all stations via the City Line. Rail tickets will be accepted on local Cardiff Bus services. Buses will run from Cardiff Central to Penarth and Barry Island on a 30 minutes frequency on each route.

On Sunday buses will run from Cardiff Central calling all stations to Radyr via the City Line, Penarth and Barry Island on a 30 minutes frequency on each route.

On Saturday & Sunday an hourly bus service will run from Cardiff Central to Bridgend via the Vale of Glamorgan. The Coryton service will not run and passengers should use the local bus services.

08:05 (Sunday) Cardiff Central to Portsmouth Harbour, starts from Bristol Temple Meads, bus replaces train between Cardiff Central and Newport then onward rail connection to Bristol Temple Meads.

04:24 Holyhead to Cardiff Central will start from Llandudno Junction at 05:15. Passengers from Holyhead and Bangor should travel on the 04:48 Virgin Trains service from Holyhead (05:15 from Bangor) and change at Chester.

Engineering work is taking place between Cardiff Central and Newport, closing some lines.

From 17:00 on Saturday and all day on Sunday, most services between Cardiff Central and Newport will be retimed to arrive and depart slightly earlier or later than the normal timetable.

On Saturday after 12:30, Arriva Trains Wales services are replaced by buses between Cardiff Central and Radyr via the City line.

After 16:00, services that usually run between Coryton and Radyr via Cardiff Central will run between Coryton and Heath Low Level, passengers should use alternative trains between Heath Low Level and Cardiff Central.

After 17:30, services that usually run between Cardiff Central and Ebbw Vale Parkway will run between Newport and Ebbw Vale Parkway, passengers should use alternative trains between Cardiff Central and Newport.

On Sunday morning the 07:40 Cardiff Central to Ebbw Vale Parkway and 08:40 Ebbw Vale Parkway services are replaced by buses.

The 07:50 Cardiff Central to London Paddington service will start from Newport at 08:08, a replacement bus will leave Cardiff at 07:23 to connect with the train at Newport.

The 08:05 Cardiff Central to Portsmouth Harbour will start from Bristol Temple Meads at 09:10, passengers should take the rail replacement bus from Cardiff Central at 07:23 to conntect with the 08:08 service from Newport to Bristol Temple Meads.

Monday to Thursday

The 19:30 Manchester Piccadilly to Carmarthen service is diverted between Port Talbot and Swansea. Passengers for intermediate stations should connect into the replacement buses between Port Talbot and Carmarthen.

The 21:42 Bridgend to Aberdare service terminates at Cardiff Central. Passengers should travel forward on the 22:46 Cardiff Central to Treherbert service and change at Pontypridd for a replacement bus to Treherbert.

The 22:38 Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff Central service is replaced by a bus between Pontypridd and Cardiff Central.

The 22:45 Barry Island to Pontypridd service is replaced by a bus between Cardiff Central and Pontypridd.

The 22:55 Cardiff Central to Radyr service is replaced by a bus throughout.

The 23:14 Radyr to Barry Island service starts from Cardiff Central. A replacement bus will run between Radyr and Barry Island, stops from Cardiff Central to Barry Island are to set down only.

Tuesday to Friday

The 01:50 Fishguard Harbour to Swansea service is replaced by a bus between Llanelli and Swansea.

The 04:34 Swansea to Shrewsbury service is replaced by a bus between Swansea and Llanelli. The bus departs Swansea at the earlier time of 04:17.

21:38 Merthyr Tydfil to Bridgend will terminate at Barry. A replacement bus service will run between Barry and Bridgend calling at all stations.

22:35 Manchester Piccadilly to Shrewsbury is diverted and will not call at Wilmslow. A replacement bus will run from Manchester Piccadilly to Crewe calling at Stockport and Wilmslow.

23:27 Crewe to Chester, bus replaces train throughout.

22:49 Penarth to Ystrad Mynach will be replaced by a bus between Cardiff Central and Ystrad Mynach.

23:00 Cheltenham Spa to Cardiff Central is cancelled with no alternative transport available.

Tuesday to Friday 

01:50 Fishguard Harbour to Swansea will be replaced by a bus between Llanelli and Swansea.

04:31 Swansea to Shrewsbury will be replaced by a bus between Swansea and Llanelli. The replacement bus will depart from Swansea at 04:17.

Monday to Thursday

The 21:04 Birmingham International to Manchester Piccadilly service is replaced by a bus between Chester and Manchester Piccadilly.

The 23:14 Manchester Piccadilly to Chester service is diverted. A replacement bus will operate from Manchester Piccadilly to Chester calling at all booked stations.

The 23:15 Manchester Piccadilly to Carmarthen service will be diverted via the Vale of Glamorgan. Passengers for stations between Cardiff and Bridgend should travel on the replacement buses, calling at intermediate stations. Passengers for stations between Bridgend and Carmarthen should connect into the Carmarthen train service at Bridgend.

Tuesday to Friday

The 00:25 Manchester Piccadilly to Chester service will not run. A replacement bus will run throughout.

  • 04:34 Swansea to Shrewsbury. This train starts forward from Llanelli. Passengers for this service should travel on the earlier replacement bus departing Swansea at 04:15
  • 05:45 Swansea to Pembroke Dock. This train starts forward from Llanelli. Passengers for this service should travel on the earlier replacement bus departing Swansea at 05:30
