Project Information:

The signalling system in the Birmingham New Street area dates back to the 1960s. It needs to be replaced to safely and reliably manage the 1,100 trains per day which use the station. The £246m upgrade is part of a wider £600m+ resignalling programme which has already seen signalling replaced across most of the West Midlands area (Snow Hill lines, Walsall, Bromsgrove, Wolverhampton, Coventry), with the Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street areas still to do.

The track at Soho North Junction (near Smethwick) will be completely replaced. This is an important junction carrying freight and other services from the south west across the Birmingham-Wolverhampton line. The junction is nearing the end of its life and has a speed restriction on it which will be removed after the work.

The outcome of these works will be a better, more reliable railway, with more capacity between Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
