More than 30 budding animators and illustrators from the University of Glamorgan have taken to the trains for a day to portray the scenery and people of the Rhondda Valley.
The students, who are studying for a Diploma in Foundation Studies Art & Design, contacted Arriva Trains Wales with a request to create a mobile art studio on services between Treforest and Treherbert.
Mo Brown, Lecturer at the University, said: “This is a drawing project where students gather visual information from different environments for use in their project work. They have to deal with movement so we decided to look at movement in the human form plus transport and travel.”
She continued: “As part of their course I organise location drawing experiences to get them 'out and about'. It’s important to make these experiences as diverse and exciting as possible so every year we visit the Mounted Section (Horses and Dogs) at the South Wales Police Headquarters and Cardiff Museum.”
19 year-old Liam Grice of Pentwyn in Cardiff was one of the students who took part in the event. The former St. Teilo’s Comprehensive pupil said, “I am really enjoying the course at Glamorgan because we get such diverse experiences and opportunities to get out in the community to generate ideas for our work. I hope next year to go on to study for a degree course at Glamorgan’s ATRiuM campus in Cardiff because the facilities there are fantastic.”
Geraint Morgan, community affairs manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to offer the experience of drawing in a different environment. The scenic views from the train and the many interesting characters they will have encountered during their journeys should provide some fascinating pieces of work to look at. The project will also have been of benefit to the students in terms of raising awareness of the world around them.”
