Young footballers from Treharris Western Football Club have secured a sponsorship deal with train operator Arriva Trains Wales.
The sponsorship is part of an initiative aimed at encouraging participation in sport and boosting safety awareness among young people.
The Club, which plays in the Merthyr Tydfil Football League, received their new playing kit at a presentation in the presence of representatives from Arriva Trains Wales and officers from the British Transport Police (BTP) Neighbourhood Policing Team based in Pontypridd. The new kit co-promotes the ‘Track Off’ organisation, which exists to support train operating companies and British Transport Police in their efforts to promote railway safety in schools.
Club coach, Mark Price said: “This is our first season in junior football within the Merthyr Tydfil Football League and with Arriva’s support; we’re hoping to make a big impact. Our squad of players come from the Treharris, Quakers Yard and Trelewis areas therefore the railway safety message is especially relevant to them.”
The club was formed in 1995 and runs teams at under 12, 14 and 16 in addition to mini football teams at under 8, 9 and 11 age groups.
Mike Hurley, franchise manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We are pleased to be supporting the team and helping to raise awareness of railway safety. By encouraging young people to take part in sport, we can ensure the development of youth football in the area and spread the stay off the tracks message.”
During the presentation, the squad watched a real life documentary presented by BTP Education Officer Andy Evans regarding a young boy tragically killed by a train while trespassing on a railway line.
The documentary highlighted the impact such a tragedy can have on individuals, families and communities following such an incident.
