A colourful mural illustrating scenes from the Rhondda Valley has been unveiled at Tonypandy railway station.
Created by 12 children aged between eight and 15 years old, the mural project was led by Trealaw Communities First and supported by the Mobile Arts Project, Groundwork Greencare and Arriva Trains Wales.
Mary Duckett, Co-ordinator for Trealaw Communities First, said: “This is the second one we have completed on the station and we decided on a local theme in design workshops held before Christmas. The mural is painted inside the brick waiting shelter and it took the children four days to complete under the supervision of Chris Partridge and Ceri Walters of the Mobile Arts Project.”
The mural includes a scenic spring landscape and a steam train emerging from a tunnel with a “Welcome to Tonypandy” greeting along the back wall of the shelter.
Mary continued: “A new ‘Time-Banking’ system has been launched for young people in Trealaw and the credits earned as part of this project will allow them to go the cinema or ten-pin bowling. It has given the children an opportunity to earn rewards by taking getting involved and contributing in a positive way in their community.”
Maggie Abbett, public relations manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “The new mural has made a dramatic impact and provides a colourful welcome for rail users at the station. By working with professional artists, the children have learned a new skill and greatly improved an area which had previously been subject to anti social behaviour.”
As a further reward for completing the mural, Arriva Trains Wales has offered the children and their families a complimentary ticket anywhere on their network.
