Tiryberth Ladies Football Club near Hengoed has teamed up with Arriva Trains Wales as part of a sponsorship deal to promote health and well being among women in the Rhymney Valley.
The partnership, which includes a striking new kit, will benefit the team who were promoted to the South Wales Ladies Premier Division last season having won 18 of their 20 matches in their first season of competition.
In addition to supporting the team, a key objective of the sponsorship is to raise awareness of railway safety among younger players. The kit promotes the 'Track Off' organisation, which exists to support train operating companies and British Transport Police in their efforts to promote railway safety in schools.
Wayne Cushing, team manager said: “We are delighted to be supported by Arriva Trains Wales and the new kit will help to raise the profile of ladies football in the community. Our first year was very successful and we are looking forward to the big challenges facing us in the coming months.”
He continued: “Our players come from a variety of backgrounds including university students, a tax inspector, a police officer and a soldier in the Army. The youngest player is 14 and we are always looking for new players of all ages. It’s a great way to keep fit, make new friends and enjoy the fun of being part of a team.”
Jez Williams, station manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “The railway plays a key role for many communities in the Rhymney Valley. This sponsorship is about encouraging more people and youngsters in particular, to take part in sporting activities during their spare time.”
He continued: “It will also help us raise awareness across South Wales of the dangers posed by trespassing or playing on the railway. We wish them well for the coming season.”
If you are interested in joining the team, please call team manager Wayne Cushing on 07772 442994. Matches are played every Sunday. Training is held every Wednesday at 7.00pm at the Welfare Ground, Tiryberth.
