A colourful scenic mural completed by local schoolchildren has been unveiled at Barry Town railway station.
Pupils from Year 1, Class 4 at Romilly Primary School in Barry have been working on the mural for the last five weeks with the support of Jean McMullen from Vale of Glamorgan Artists.
The colourful mural depicts scenery from around the Barry area including the beach at Barry Island, ships arriving at the port and aircraft taking off from Cardiff International Airport. Each of the pupils who participated are also featured in the mural.
The art project is part of a scheme where local people are helping to care for and take pride in their railway station. The station was officially adopted by the school under the Arriva Trains Wales ‘Adopt a Station’ scheme in 2005.
It encourages community volunteers to help keep an eye on their station
and let their local station manager know of any issues that may need to be addressed so that they can be dealt with quickly.
Fi Rodgers, class teacher, said: “In creating the mural, it has given the children an opportunity to learn about the local community, develop new skills such as painting and broaden their links with the organisations such as the British Transport Police (BTP).”
She continued: “The support of parents and volunteers has been wonderful in giving their time to help repaint the wall where the mural is on display and tidy the children’s gardening area.”
Following the unveiling, officers from the BTP were invited to the school to see further examples of the children’s talents, talk about their work and give a demonstration of the various equipment that is used whilst on duty.
Jez Williams, station manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We wanted to do help the school put the station back at the centre of the town, as well as brighten its appearance for rail users.
“The station adoption project has given the children a focal point in the community that allows them to display their work and there’s a huge sense of pride about what has been achieved.”
