Environmentally friendly pupils from Radyr Comprehensive School in Cardiff are taking on a new challenge by adoption the village railway station
Pupils from the schools ‘Green Flag Committee’ have volunteered to help Arriva Trains Wales keep the station in the best possible condition as part of the company’s ‘Adopt a Station’ scheme.
The scheme encourages community volunteers to help keep an eye on stations and let their local station manager know of any issues that may need to be addressed so that they can be dealt with quickly.
Heather Nicholas, representing the committee, said: “The school has always been conscious of its responsibility towards the environment and the committee exists to encourage can recycling, white paper recycling, mobile phone recycling, Christmas card recycling, recycling awareness and litter clear-up amongst its pupils.”
She continued: “The station is an important facility for the community and we hope to use the scheme as a base for increasing re-cycling awareness amongst rail users and hopefully undertake some environmental improvements in the car park, which will give the pupils an opportunity to gain valuable work experience.”
The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales. The award scheme began in 1996 as a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country.
Radyr Comprehensive School has recently achieved the silver standard in the Green Flag Award. In order to reach the Gold standard, the school must continue to keep all re-cycling projects running.
Jez Williams, station manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Green Flag Committee to help the environment at the railway station. It is encouraging to see young people being conscious of the effect litter and waste can have on the environment and the station.”
He continued: “Some of the recycling ideas generated from this partnership could well be considered at many more of our adopted stations and we look forward to listening to the ideas the Committee come forward with.”
