PLATFORM ART FOR PENCOED PUPILS

Pupils from Pencoed Junior School near Bridgend have been given the opportunity to display their creative talents at the village railway station.

Pupils with Alex SymondsAs part of a “Say no to drugs” campaign run by the Cardiff Devils Ice Hockey team, the pupils have been learning about healthy living and some of the art on display at the station reflects the children’s view on the subject.

The idea of displaying the children’s artwork at the station was developed by local resident Michael Walters and Carol Davies, the school secretary.  Michael adopted the station in 2006 as part of the Arriva Trains Wales ‘Adopt a Station’ scheme, which encourages communities to help look after unstaffed stations on the network.

Jez Williams, station manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to provide poster cases for the children to display their work on the platform.  In addition to regular reports provided to us on the appearance of the station, Michael has gone that extra mile by engaging with children in an important subject.”

The school’s relationship with the Cardiff Devils has allowed more than 240 children to enjoy the red hot atmosphere of a home game involving the team.  Players from the Devils have also visited the school to talk with the children about healthy living and the dangers involved with drugs.

Pupils with artworkSpeaking at the station, Mrs Davies, said: “This campaign has been a great experience for the children and we are grateful to the Devils for their support and the many local sponsors who have made it such a success.  The children have been thrilled to meet their sporting heroes and have thoroughly enjoyed their visits to see the Devils play.”

She continued: “Raising awareness of the many dangers faced by youngsters today is a key step in their learning development.  It is also an excellent way of helping the children to understand the importance of healthy eating.  The project has allowed the children to express themselves and the pictures can now be enjoyed by passengers waiting for trains at the station.”
