SPECIAL DAY OUT FOR SWANSEA BAY PUPILS

Sixty pupils from Oystermouth Primary in Swansea have enjoyed special educational days out by train courtesy of Arriva Trains Wales and the British Transport Police.

ATW Class 175The children aged five to six years old from year one and two classes, travelled from Swansea to Carmarthen and back as part of a project they are currently undertaking.

The children are working on a project focussing on ‘journeys’.

The work is based on different types of travel such as their route to school, ships and trains. They have also visited the post office and the National Waterfront Museum as part of their work.

During the journey, the children worked on task sheets and ticked all the features they saw during the picturesque journey. PC Chris Draisey, PCSOs Lisa Jones and Andrew Rawlingson also talked to the children about personal safety and the danger of playing near the railway line.

Class Teacher, Debbie Webster, said: “these kind of learning experiences out of the class room equip the children with valuable life skills, teaching them about our community, and offering a safe way to introduce them to unfamiliar surroundings”.

Stewart Keay, Station Manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We were only too pleased to help the schoolchildren with their project.  Having a lesson in a different environment will have been a new learning experience for the children and it’s clear that they thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Carmarthen by train.”

The work that the children are doing is going to be displayed in their school, as well as being made into a book cataloguing their experiences.
