Two Swansea Bay primary school children have featured in a winning photograph submitted into a UK wide railway competition promoting community railways.
Oystermouth Primary pupils Lottie Mallett and Charlotte Griffiths were captured on camera during a special train trip to Carmarthen organised by Arriva Trains Wales (ATW) as part of a school project on transport.
In the photo taken by Geraint Morgan, community affairs manager for ATW, the girls are seen talking with British Transport Police officer Lisa Jones who is explaining her role and how the police radio works.
The photo was chosen out of more than 40 entries in the “Best Community Rail Image” category organised by the Association of Community Rail Partnerships. The £200 prize award, collected at the prestigious awards held in Bexhill-on-Sea, has been donated to the school fund.
Caroline Morgan, year two teacher at the school, said: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Carmarthen during the summer and enjoyed meeting the train staff and police officers. The girls are thrilled to have been in the winning photograph and the financial donation will be used to buy additional learning resources and equipment for the playground.”
Geraint Morgan, said: “I’d not had the camera long but it was a pleasant surprise to be nominated for this award. The success of the picture is really down to Lisa, Lottie and Charlotte who developed such a good rapport on board the train. The photo simply captured the moment and our principle of introducing young people to rail travel through education.”
