A high profile operation to clampdown on anti-social behaviour at railway stations in the Vale of Glamorgan has been hailed a success.
Codenamed 'Operation VoG', British Transport Police (BTP) Neighbourhood Policing Teams undertook high visibility train and station patrols between Cogan and Llantwit Major Station as part of an operation involving South Wales Police and Arriva Trains Wales. The operation was in direct response to concerns raised by local communities.
During the first two days of the operation BTP produced positive results due to the proactive nature of the operation and the presence of the Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Officers dealt with a variety of anti social behaviour related incidents, including underage drinking, substance misuse and trespass. Groups of youths were also spoken to in relation to loitering at stations with no intention to travel and a number of ASBO referrals were submitted.
British Transport Police Acting Police Sergeant Jaci Thomas from the Neighbourhood Policing Team based in Cardiff said “Operation VOG has had a positive impact on the community though the results achieved and we hope for this to continue.”
She continued: “Working in partnership with Arriva Trains Wales, the purpose of the operation was to reassure the public and communicate to individuals that anti-social behaviour is neither acceptable nor tolerated in the railway environment. We look forward to continuing these successful partnerships and seeing a positive impact in and around the area.”
Jez Williams, Station Manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We are hopeful that this operation will serve as a deterrent and reminder to children that loitering and anti-social behaviour at railway stations cannot be tolerated.”
He continued: “The safety and comfort of our passengers and train crew is of paramount importance. Parents can help us to keep their children safe by reminding them of the consequences of this activity and being aware of their whereabouts during the evenings.”
