BEHIND THE SCENES VISIT FOR LAMPHEY SCHOOL CHILDREN

Children from Class three at Lamphey Primary School in Pembrokeshire have been given a guided tour of Carmarthen railway station courtesy of local train company Arriva Trains Wales and the British Transport Police (BTP).

Lamphey Primary SchoolThe 27 children, aged seven and eight, travelled by train with their teachers from Lamphey to Carmarthen as part of the annual end of term trip.

While on the station, they were shown the station ticket office and traincrew depot, where they were given a demonstration on how speed guns are used on the railway.

The children were also given an opportunity to learn about railway safety and the dangers of playing on the railway from Police Community Support Officers Lisa Jones and Andrew Rollingson, who patrol the railway in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.  The children also received an educational pack promoting railway safety.

Year three teacher Mr Richard Lloyd said: “Today has been a valuable learning experience for the children.  Whilst many have been on the train to Swansea, London and even Disneyland Paris, for some, it was their first ever journey by train.”

He continued: “They were particularly interested in the tickets and the view from the train between Lamphey and Carmarthen.  The trip has helped them understand how the station works whilst raising their awareness of personal safety on the railway.”

Stewart Keay, station manager for Arriva Trains Wales in Carmarthen, said: “We were only too pleased to help the school with their request.  In visiting the station and meeting the staff, they have been able to gain experience of travelling around by public transport and talk about issues such as ‘Stranger Danger’ with the police officers.”
