LLANHILLETH STATION OPENS SUNDAY 27 APRIL 2008

Llanhilleth station will become the fifth new station to open on the Ebbw Valley line this Sunday April 27 with the first train from Cardiff stopping at 08.26. The first train to Cardiff from the station will stop at 08.49 am.

Train at Ebbw Vale station A dedicated bus service to and from Abertillery will operate from the station to meet every train Mondays to Saturdays up to 5.19 each evening. The buses will leave Abertillery High Street for the station at approximately half hourly intervals.

The Ebbw Valley service has proved to be very popular since it opened Wednesday 6 February with over 100,000 passengers travelling on the service.

Arriva Trains Wales head of franchise, Michael Vaughan said: “This new station will make it far more convenient for people who live between Ebbw Vale and Newbridge to take advantage of the Ebbw Valley service. I’m sure that this new station will prove to be as popular as the ones which are already in operation on this route.”

A Cheap Day Return from Llanhilleth to Cardiff – available after 09.15am - will be £5.10 with a standard day return costing £6. A single ticket will be £4.10. A seven day ticket between Llanhilleth and Cardiff costs just £22.80.

Trains leave Llanhilleth Station for Cardiff starting at 06.48 and then at 48 minutes past every hour until 10.48 Mondays to Saturdays. Trains leave Llanhilleth Station for Ebbw Vale starting at 07.19 and then at 19 minutes past every hour until 11.19 Mondays to Saturdays. Trains run on a two hourly basis on Sundays

Blaenau Gwent Council worked in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government, Network Rail, Arriva Trains Wales, Capita Symonds and Amey Rail to re-open the 18-mile former freight line from the Ebbw Vale steelworks and build six new passenger stations.The project was funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and Objective 1 Grant from the European Union
