VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT TO HELP CARE FOR STATION FLOWERBEDS

Enthusiastic members of the public with an interest in gardening are being sought by Arriva Trains Wales (ATW) to help care for flower beds at Grangetown station in Cardiff.

Grangetown flower bedsThe four raised flower beds were initially refurbished in a ‘Groundforce’ style makeover undertaken by volunteer staff from the company in 2006.

Jez Williams, station manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “Similar gardening projects at other adopted stations have been successful in national competitions, so we’d love to hear from anyone who can spare a few hours a month to help us care for the beds.   Gardening is a great way to keep fit and in full bloom, the flowers provide a welcoming sight for passengers.”

The station was adopted in September 2007 by Penarth resident Joy Webber, who provides regular feedback to ATW in terms of the station’s appearance and who also helps keep any weeds in check.

Arriva’s station adoption scheme encourages community volunteers or groups to help care for unstaffed stations through the reporting of faults and where appropriate, develop small scale enhancements.  Cleaning and maintenance is undertaken by the company’s station care team.

In recognition of their support, volunteers are eligible for £75 of rail vouchers valid anywhere on the UK rail network.  Anyone interested in volunteering can contact ATW’s Customer Relations Department on 0845 6061 660.
