More than 70 pupils from Clwyd Primary School in Penlan, Swansea have enjoyed special days out by train courtesy of Arriva Trains Wales and the British Transport Police.
The children aged between three and seven years old from the reception, nursery and special needs classes, travelled over three days from Swansea to Carmarthen and back.
Currently working on a project focussing on ‘journeys’, the children have already been on a bus ride and are planning further trips to the beach and Cardiff International Airport.
During the journey, the children worked on task sheets and ticked all the features they saw during the picturesque journey. PC Chris Draisey and PCSOs Lisa Jones and Andrew Rawlingson also talked to the children about personal safety and the danger of playing near the railway line.
Louise Peters, nursery class teacher at the school, said: “All the children have been looking forward to these trips and for quite a few, it has been their first ever train journey. As part of the project, the children are building a role play area in school, which looks like a station waiting room.”
She continued: “They are also collecting old pictures of steam trains that are displayed on the classroom wall. We’re having lots of fun and the children will have learned a great deal from the train ride.”
Julian Viggers, Station Manager for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We were only too pleased to help the schoolchildren with their project. Having a lesson in a different environment will have been a new learning experience for the children and it’s clear that they thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Carmarthen by train.”
